LANGUAGE

The constitution now designates Sinhala, a language of Indo-Aryan origin spoken by the majority of the population, and Tamil as the official languages. English is widely spoken.

MONEY

​The official currency is rupees (Rs). Notes are in denominations of Rs 5000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of Rs 10, 5, 2 and 1; anything smaller has little use.
